Anxiety Therapy in Bourne

How does hypnotherapy help with anxiety?

We can use Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy to access the relaxed intellectual state of mind. The brain can be taught that actually, you’ve got this. The brain is taught to look for positive actions, interactions and thoughts. As a result, this supports its production of positive neurotransmitters and creates new positive neural pathways for better resilience to stress and anxiety.

Solution Focused Clinical Hypnotherapy is based on neuroscience and how the brain works. For instance, we are simply supporting your brain to find solutions and more positive outcomes to react in a more calm and confident approach to life. The great thing is that this approach supports children and adults effectively to achieve great things in everyday life.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is the brains way of telling us something isn’t right. The symptomology of anxiety is often the part that tells us things definitely don’t feel right. Feeling sick, headaches, increased stress, negative thoughts, picking, tics, the inability to leave the house are all symptoms of anxiety. For a more in-depth explanation of anxiety, The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a great resource.

We do however need this fight/flight/freeze system. We used the inbuilt fight or flight system as humans, a response from our ancient past when we ran away from animals in the wild. This served us really well at the time as when our brain perceives that a threat is imminent, it surges in cortisol and adrenaline. It shuts down the systems that we can do without and gives us that superhuman power and strength to fight or flight. It’s actually quite incredible that the human body can gear us up for such things.

The problem with anxiety

Anxiety may have served us well in the past but now there aren’t wild beasts living on every corner, and a trip to the supermarket doesn’t usually involve running into a polar bear. So, we don’t really have much need for such an intense fight or flight response.
Anxious person.
However, this incredible response can still get activated through negative thought. Either negatively introspecting about the past, ‘ Why did that happen to me?’ or negatively forecasting the future, ‘What if I don’t get that job? What if I am not good enough?’.

These thoughts contribute to an increase in anxiety and our stress bucket starts to fill up. Often there is nothing physical to fight or flight from except our own thoughts. These thoughts can trigger negative responses which can then in turn induce crippling anxiety. All that adrenaline and cortisol pumping around with no way to help it dissipate.

Some people find themselves more in control of their thoughts than others. Experiencing mild anxiety now and again is completely normal. For others, anxiety is a constant battle.

Again, it’s how our brains are pre-wired, which is very individual to us. The brain is very complex but due to its neuroplasticity has every capability to change.

When does anxiety become a problem?

Anxiety becomes a problem when it’s affecting your everyday life.  If you are finding yourself making excuses not to do things, or are having daily side effects from anxiety, then it time to talk to someone about it. For example, stomach upsets, heart palpitations, panic attacks or feeling irritable most of the time, not going to school/work are all common symptoms of anxiety. You may not even know yourself what is causing your anxiety, and that’s perfectly normal too.
