I remember a few years ago I was asked to teach in Birmingham for the weekend. Knowing I was capable of delivering the course wasn’t the issue. The choice to stay over was. I hadn’t been away from home over night on my own for a long time and my anxiety knew it.
Knowing what I do, I decided I needed a plan to make my stay simple, fun but more importantly achievable.
I needed to look at making the trip easy and more importantly one that would reframe any negative thinking I had. So I decided to approach it in a different way. Hopped onto booking.com and booked a beautiful hotel. After looking at all the pictures I hoped that my allocated room would have a perfect bath tub in it.
Leaving early I head to the university campus to deliver my lecturing for the day and then drove to my accommodation just around the corner. Just before checking in I had noticed that the street had been lit up in beautiful white Christmas lights and looked stunning. Checked in and head too my room.
I opened the door and to my surprise there was the bath tub in the room, the one that I really wanted. Coincidence or magic, who knew but I did laugh a lot, to myself.
That night I had my first uber delivery, a fab bath and the best nights sleep I could of asked for. On my own.
At the time it was the biggest win of the year. I had conquered over the negativity and reframed being on my own somewhere new.
Never underestimate the small wins especially when your primitive brain is telling you its scary don’t do it.
